What resolution do I need to buy?

Resolution is crucial, but perhaps not to the extent you might think. Traditionally, projectors with a minimum XGA (1024 x 768) resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio were needed to deliver PowerPoint presentations. SVGA (800 x 600) is still used in some entry-level versions, and manufacturers of pocket projectors occasionally employ peculiar, low native resolutions that they are reticent to disclose. Widescreen formats starting at WXGA (1280 x 800) and 720p are replacing the antiquated 4:3 standards as a result of high-definition video. Personally, I wouldn't suggest going lower than XGA.
